The Bill Bothwick Student Scholarships were announced by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Ryan Smith MP in March 2011 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first meeting of the Land Conservation Council (LCC). They honour the vision of the Hon. Bill Borthwick, Victoria's first Minister for Conservation and Deputy Premier from 1981 to 1982, and a central figure in establishing the LCC to advise government on the use of Victoria's public land. At the first meeting of the Land Conservation Council on 1 April 1971 Minsiter Bill Borthwick told the new councillors to make their recommendations on the use of public land "as if for a thousand years".
The scholarships are awarded to students undertaking an Honours, Masters or PhD research project relating to public land in Victoria, including terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. This year's recipients and project summaries are available here.
