LCC Mallee Area Review (1985-1989)

Notices showing the boundary of the Mallee study area and advising that an investigation was to be carried out were published in the Victoria Government Gazette and in local and other Victorian newspapers in June 1985.  A descriptive resources report was published in November 1987.  Following the publication of the report, the Council received 201 submissions on the future use of public land from individuals, associations, companies, and local and State government bodies.  After considering these submissions, and having visited the study area, the Council formulated its proposed recommendations, which were published in September 1988. The Council received 2,095 submissions and letters commenting on these proposals.  The final recommendations were published in August 1989.

From the outset of this review, the Council recognised that it required a comprehensive study of the vegetation and fauna on public land, to provide an objective base for future land-use decisions. Floristic vegetation mapping provided the basis for recommendations for a suite of new representative parks and reserves and large additions were made to national parks in the Big Desert and Sunset Country. Grazing was also phased out in large parts of the Sunset Country and Mallee. As a proportion of public land in the study area, the recommended parks and reserves, at 74%, was the highest of any LCC region.
